Are you wanting a way to make money or a little extra while staying home with your babies? Well, I am so happy to tell you that it is very possible. The best part is you can start a mom blog and make money from it all during nap time.
I am going to walk you through how to start a mom blog and make money from home.
1. Figure out your niche.
This step is one of the most important, and can be so hard for some to figure out (me being one of those people).
When I first started my blog, it was basically just a hobby. I wrote to help with motherhood and struggles that I thought other mamas were going through too.
It wasn’t until a short while ago that I really wanted to turn my blog into a way to bring in extra income for my family. Having a niche and really knowing your audience will help you do that.
There are so many lifestyle blogs about health and fitness, beauty, travel, DIY, etc.
So to find a niche that is right for you, start by asking yourself some questions:
What am I passionate about?
What is always on your mind? Something that you know all about or always learning about? What do people come to for advice about? What are your hobbies?
You can even use your background to help you. There are so many teachers that have used that in their blogs to help them create Ebooks or courses about the topics that they have knowledge in. They use that to help people solve a problem.
Is there a need for it?
You can go on Pinterest or Google and find a million and one blog posts or articles about a certain topic. But that doesn’t mean that it will bring viewers to your blog.
A great resource is to use Facebook groups. Go to one of the groups you follow that is in relation to your niche idea and search the keywords. If you find that there are many people asking or talking about this topic, then you have found your niche lady!
Can I monetize my niche?
There are so many different ways to make money with a blog. Sponsored ads, affiliate links, selling products or services are just some ways.
I hope answering those questions helped you figure out your niche and ready to start writing! Now we are on to >>
2. Choosing your blogging platform
I personally use WordPress.org and have never looked back. As with anything, there are so many options for a blogging platform but I will walk you through how to set up a WordPress blog here.
A WordPress.org blog requires hosting and I will show you how to do that with SiteGround.
Disclosure: Please note that there are links within this post that are affiliate links. This means that I may get a commission from them with no extra cost to you. I don’t share anything that I don’t personally love and use.
I recommend WordPress because:
- There are so many ways for you to customize your site with different plugins or themes that are either free or very affordable
- You have so many resources to help you with any questions from YouTube, blog posts and WordPress forums
- It is easy to use for people who are not a tech wiz (like me!)
3. Choose a domain name
Now we are really getting to the good stuff!!
This is where you really get to be creative and come up with your domain name. Whatever you chose will be your web address for your blog – www.yourblog.com
It would be a good idea to have your niche figured out to help with this part. You could always use it for your domain name but don’t stress about it too much. As you can see, Mom Life With Three Under Five doesn’t really tell what my blog is about either.
The best thing to do is make a list of what comes to mind, but make sure to keep it simple, short and easy to spell/read.
4. Time to Start A Blog with SiteGround!
What I love most about SiteGround is that they make it so fast and easy to set up everything that you need for your blog.
That is just what every busy mama wants to hear, am I right??
That is not the only thing to love about this site though, on top of being easy to use for everyone:
- SiteGround has a highly specialized team of people working 24/7 to make sure your website or blog is safe and secure
- They have great customer service who are there to answer any question, day or night
- You get a FREE domain name
- FREE WordPress Install
- Super affordable for new bloggers too!
Now I’m done raving about it, I promise! Let’s get you started!
Step 1: Choose your hosting plan
SiteGround gives you three plans to choose from: StartUp, GrowBig, or GoGeek
- The StartUp plan is perfect for people with one website that are starting now
- The GrowBig plan is a great value for money offer, including the option for multiple websites and the SuperCacher that greatly improves a WordPress and Joomla website speed
- The GoGeek plan is perfect for people with e-commerce and larger sites, or more geeky development needs like staging and GIT integration
I personally went with the GrowBig plan. When I was first starting my blog, I didn’t think that I would need or want to start any other websites at the time, I just wanted the most bang for my buck. That totally worked out for me in the long run because I have created more websites without having to pay for another hosting site.
Don’t feel like you have to get the GrowBig plan too though, when you are just getting started as a blogger, StartUp is amazing too!
Plus you get an awesome discount with my link!
Click Get Plan to take you to step 2.
Step 2: Choose a domain name
Now it’s time to grab that list of domain names that you made earlier. This name will be how people will remember you later, and you will use them for any social media accounts that will link to your blog.
When you get to this page you can use your existing domain name or create a new one.
When you type in your domain name, it will check if that name has been taken or not. This part can get frustrating if you have fallen in love with a name but isn’t available.
Just play around with it until you find something that you like and isn’t taken.
Step 3: Review of your package/account/payment
Finish up by filling out your account and payment information.
After approval you will see a screen saying “Your account was successfully created!” it will process for a minute or so and then you will see a button that says Proceed to Customer Area. Go on and press that button.
Next it will bring you to a screen that looks like this. You are going to want to click on the set up site button.
Set up WordPress on your new SiteGround Hosting.
On the next screen, click on Start New Website and press Select under WordPress.
At the bottom of the page, SiteGround will ask you to fill out login information for your Admin access to your WordPress blog.
Once you have clicked Continue you will get a screen to optin to SG Site Scanner. This is really just for your own personal preference, you don’t have to use this if you don’t want to.
After clicking the Finish button, you will get this screen >>
Congratulations on starting your first blog!!!
